History of the SS RWMG

The Southern Sierra Regional Water Management Group (SSRWMG) was formed in conjunction with Integrated Regional Water Management Planning (IRWMP) efforts initiated by the Sequoia Riverlands Trust (SRT), Sierra Nevada Alliance, and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. The Sierra Nevada Conservancy provided SRT with a grant in 2008 to launch the IRWM planning process. With that grant, SRT identified stakeholders, began holding public meetings, and applied for a grant from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to advance the region’s IRWM process.
SRT successfully secured additional funds from DWR in 2010 and 2012 to facilitate the development of the SSRWMG’s governance structure, objectives, and strategies. In 2012, the SS RWMG applied for and received $520,000 to write its IRWM Plan, a region-wide, voluntary planning document that identifies broadly supported, multiple-benefit water resource projects and programs to ensure the long-term health of the region’s water supply and quality.
As of 2013, the SS RWMG has submitted applications to implement three projects, of which two have been funded: the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is funding the Long Meadow Restoration Project and DWR is conducting a hydrologic capacity study for the town of Three Rivers.
